Total Global Brown Coal/Lignite Production was 965Mt in 2008 and  913Mt in 2009. Brown coal production decreased by 5.4% in 2009. Germany remains the world’s largest brown coal producer, despite production decreasing by around 2.9% in 2009. Brown coal production increased slightly in Canada and India.

Governments of 13 countries where tigers still live have endorsed a plan to save the big cats from extinction. In the last 100 years, tiger numbers have dropped from about 100,000 to less than 3,500 tigers in the wild today. Delegates at a summit in St Petersburg, Russia, agreed to double tiger numbers by 2022. The countries will focus on protecting tiger habitats, addressing poaching, illegal trade and providing the financial resources for the plan. There has been a 40% decline in numbers in a decade, and some populations are expected to disappear within the next 20 years. The United Nations Environment Programme (Unep) says that the St Petersburg Declaration will strengthen international collaboration to protect the majestic Asian wild cat. Leaders of the 21-member Asia-Pacific Co-operation (APEC) forum have pledged to establish  a regional free-trade area. The agreement was announced on Sunday at the end of a two-day summit held in Yokohama of Japan. The initiative would link the world's three biggest economies - the United States, Japan and China. However, deep differences remain - chiefly between the US and China - over trade imbalances and currency distortions. The USA aims to increase their exports to the region and considers China's cheap currency is a barrier to that goal. Chinese President Hu Jintao has said any change will only be made at Beijing's own pace. In their final declaration, APEC leaders reaffirmed their "unwavering commitment to achieving free and open trade and investment in the region".
