India tortures Bangladeshi nationals at Indian frontier

Two Bangladeshi cattle traders, who were tortured and left unconscious by the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) in border areas of the district's sadar upazila, are fighting for life at Satkhira Sadar Hospital. Of the two, Rafiqul Islam, 35, is from Sultanpur of Satkhira town and Fazlur Rahman, 45, from Mahmudur village of sadar upazila. On Thursday night (January 20, 2011), the BSF men of Kaijuri camp caught Rafiqul when he and a group of fellow traders were returning to Bangladesh with cattle through Kaijuri-Baikari border, locals said. Rafiqul was beaten up and left inside Bangladesh territory around 3:30am yesterday. Bangladesh Border Guard (BGB) of Baikari camp sent him to the hospital. Taking part in an open discussion, Odhikar general secretary Atikur Rahman Khan said BSF is killing one Bangladeshi in every four days. Human rights group Odhikar and Human Rights Watch at a press conference at BRAC Centre on December 13, 2010 revealed a report on killing, abuse and torture by the Border Security Force (BSF) of India along the border. About 1,000 Bangladeshis were killed by Indian Border Security Forces (BSF) over the last decade, according to a report released by rights groups in the capital city Dhaka in Bangladesh on December 13, 2010. Apart from the killings, the report says, the Indian border guards usually threaten, abuse and beat Bangladeshi people living in frontiers villages, but they hardly get any cooperation from Bangladesh police. Over 900 Bangladeshis killed by BSF in last decade, says Human Rights Watch report

Over 900 Bangladeshi nationals have been killed by the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) over the last decade, Human Rights Watch said in a report released on December 9, 2010. Human Rights Watch found no evidence in any death it documented that the person was engaged in any activity that would justify such an extreme response by BSF, the report added. It is revealed that in several cases they found that Bangladeshi nationals were injured or killed due to indiscriminate firing from across the border. For instance, 13-year-old Abdur Rakib was shot as he was grazing his buffaloes near the border when a soldier opened fire. Another boy, Mohammad Omar Faruq, age 15, was injured. The USA based international human rights wathdog also observed that many of the Bangladeshi people were killed by BSF when they crossed into Indian territory for cattle rustling or other smuggling activities.
