BD govt. hikes 11.47 percent fuel price

The government of Bangladesh has hiked the fuel prices of the country on the 3rd day of new year. Petrol and octane prices by Tk 5 per litre setting new prices at   Tk 96 and  Tk 99. Besides,  diesel and kerosene prices were up for Tk 7 setting new prices at  Tk 68 for the both items.   The prices would be effective from Thursday midnight, it said in a media statement at night.  The opposition BNP on Dec 26 threatened country wide general strike a day after the fuel prices were further increased.  But the opposition's reaction could not be known immediately after the fresh increase in the fuel oil costs. 

Bangladesh wins ODI series against West Indies

Bangladeshies have won 5-match series  with 3-2 victory  against West Indies. They won by 2 wickets today in the deciding match. This is their 2nd ODI series victory in cricket. They first got first series victory in 2010 against  New Zealand .  Bangladesh lost eight wickets as they were chasing 218-run target set by West Indies Indies in the fifth and deciding one-day international at their home ground Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka on Saturday. The vice-captain smashed a solid 45 off 42, featuring seven boundaries, and hauled two wickets of the Caribbeans removing Darren Bravo (51) and Andre Russell for a duck. After restricting West Indies to a modest 217, Bangladesh appeared in trouble with losing three wickets -- Tamim Iqbal (4), Anamul Haque (0) and Jahurul Islam (10) -- only for 30 runs. Elections to 269 municipalities of Bangladesh in January 2011

The Election Commission (EC) of Bangladesh has announced schedules for long awaited municipal elections to 269 municipalities under seven divisions of the country. The elections will be held in a staggering way on Jan 12, 13, 17 and 18. Chief election commissioner ATM Shamsul Huda announced the polls schedules on Thursday at the commission's conference room in Dhaka of Bangladesh. Among the 310 municipalities, 269 will go for the elections. Of the remaining municipalities, the terms of 17 are yet to expire while 24 are facing a legal bar to holding elections. A total of 27 municipalities under Rangpur Division and 49 under Rajshahi Division will go for polls on Jan 12. The last date for submitting nomination papers is Dec 13, while that for scrutiny are Dec 14 and 15, and for withdrawal of nomination is Dec 26 this year. Bangladesh issues red alert as anthrax spreads out in new areas

Bangladesh issued a red alert on Sunday over an outbreak of anthrax which has infected nearly 300 people and killed about 150 cattle in the six north-west districts of the country in the past two weeks. The outbreak was first detected on August 19 in Sirajganj district, 150 km (90 miles) from the capital Dhaka. The victims fell sick after eating beef from anthrax-affected cattle. "We have issued a red alert and asked livestock officials, civil surgeons and health workers to fan out to detect sick cows and single out them immediately," Abdul Latif Biswas, minister for fisheries and livestock, told a news conference. Infected people suffer fever, severe pain and swollen tissues, often with lesions. The disease can be deadly if not treated immediately. Anthrax commonly infects cattle which ingest or inhale the bacterium while grazing, and can infect people who come into contact with them or consume their meat.
